Fear or anxiety about visiting the dentist is common in both children and adults. However, dental care is necessary for healthy teeth and full-body wellness. If your child struggles with going to the dentist, you can help them relax and make it easier for your provider to give them the care they need in the following ways.

3 Ways to Soothe Your Child's Dental Fears

1. Talk About It

While a child's fear of dental treatment may sound silly, it’s real to them. Treat their concerns seriously. Talk to them about visiting the dentist, why it's necessary, and what will happen. Listen to their questions and concerns, and answer positively to help set your child's mind at ease.

2. Read Books & Play

You can help normalize the idea of dental visits by including them in playtime. Have pretend visits with your child, taking turns as the dentist and the patient. Make it fun and rewarding. You can also read a range of children's books about visiting the dentist to show your child that these beloved characters have the same misgivings, which are alleviated when they find the appointment is nothing to worry about.

3. Drop by the Office

DentistSee if there's a time outside your child's regular appointments when you can visit the dental office and meet the staff. Show your child around the waiting area and the treatment rooms. Let them explore and get acquainted with the space. If possible, ask the dentist and hygienists to talk to your child. A little familiarity can remove a lot of your child's uncertainty.
