The American Optometric Association recommends annual eye exams for children and exams for adults ages 18 to 64 every two years, whether or not they’re currently wearing corrective lenses. One of the essential parts of these appointments is a vision test. If you’ve had one, you’ve received a score consisting of two numbers, such as 20/20. Everyone has heard the phrase “hindsight’s 20/20,” but what does this visual acuity rating mean? Here’s what you need to know.

How Optometrists Measure Vision

Optometrists use a visual acuity chart to determine your vision accuracy. In the United States, doctors use the Snellen System. The table helps establish your visual sharpness. It consists of a series of lines of letters that get progressively smaller. The smallest line of text you can read at a distance of 20 feet establishes your natural visual acuity without the assistance of corrective lenses.

vision testA vision test score of 20/20 on the Snellen chart indicates a person can read the smallest line of text from 20 feet away. The first number shows the distance away from the table you were when taking it. Twenty feet is deemed the distance of optical infinity. The second number compares your vision to average. For example, if you have 20/30 vision, it means you can see characters at 20 feet away that someone with average eyesight could see from 30 feet away.

The Significance of Scores

Contrary to popular belief, a score of 20/20 doesn’t indicate perfect vision. It merely means average sight. Some people can have 20/15 vision, for instance, which indicates they can see characters at 20 feet away that the average person can only see at 15 feet away. About 35% of adults have 20/20 vision without corrective eyewear. With corrective eyewear, most people can achieve average vision.
