Although you should leave all electrical work to a licensed professional, it’s still important to have a basic understanding of how the system functions. When you know why circuit breakers trip, for example, you can adjust habits to reduce the load before wires overheat and catch on fire. To keep your family out of harm’s way, here are electrical safety protocols to follow.

3 Electrical Safety Tips to Use at Home

1. Have Any Wiring Issues Addressed

electrical-workIf it’s been a while since your electrical wiring was inspected, reach out to a licensed electrician to arrange an appointment. Corroded and frayed wires should be replaced immediately. The damaged components could cause electrical surges along different circuits, causing potential harm to appliances. Exposed wires should also be secured in place in walls, floors, and ceilings. This eliminates the risk of anyone accidentally brushing against them and getting shocked or electrocuted.

2. Don't Overload the Electrical System

The electricity you get from the utility company flows to your home’s main electrical service panel, or breaker box. From there, the electricity is distributed to different circuits. Each circuit supplies power to different outlets throughout your home. If you use extension cords and plug too many appliances or electronics into the outlets, the circuits could overload. When the wires have too much current running through them, they could overheat and catch on fire. Circuit breakers are safety devices that cut off the flow of electricity to circuits before they overload. To prevent frequent circuit trips, don’t plug too many devices into outlets at once.

3. Never Pour Water on Electrical Fires

If faulty electrical work or damage causes a house fire, don’t use water to put out the flames. Water won’t suppress the fire; it will only make the flames grow more intense. If there are exposed wires, you could also get shocked or electrocuted when using water to quell the blaze. To stop the fire and remain safe in the process, use a fire extinguisher instead and call 911 for help.
