Strep throat is a fairly common bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils. Since it can cause serious complications if left untreated, it’s essential to visit an urgent care center as soon as symptoms arise. Here’s what you should know about this condition so you can determine when a trip to the doctor is in order.

What Causes Strep Throat?

Strep throat is caused by a kind of bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. Because these bacteria can spread among individuals through airborne droplets, the condition is incredibly contagious. For example, you can get step throat simply by standing in the same room as someone who has it and inhaling the airborne droplets that coughing or sneezing produces. You can also get it by sharing drinks with someone or touching a surface that has been contaminated with Streptococcus pyogenes and then touching vulnerable areas like your mouth, nose, or eyes.

What Are the Symptoms of Strep Throat?

urgent careIt’s easy to misinterpret the symptoms of strep throat as those of the common cold and therefore put off visiting urgent care. As the condition progresses, though, the symptoms tend to become more severe. They typically include sore throat, congestion, headaches, and fatigue.

Unlike the common cold, strep throat may also cause a fever, inflamed tonsils, white patches in the throat, and small red dots on the roof of the mouth. Fortunately, diagnosing the condition takes just a few minutes. If the results come back positive, antibiotics can reduce the severity of the symptoms, prevent complications, and speed up recovery.
