Maintaining a healthy lawn is a complex process. Not only are there numerous factors to balance, such as the irrigation schedule and fertilizer amount, but every season brings a unique set of concerns. If lawn care basics have you a bit stumped, you’re not alone. Learn more about how to address some of the most common questions.

Typical Lawn Care Questions

What's the best mowing height for your lawn?

The appropriate mowing height depends on the grass species. Warm-season grasses should generally be kept around one to three inches in length. For example, Bermuda grass should be kept under 1.5 inches, Zoysia under two inches, and St. Augustine can be left anywhere from two to four inches.

How often should you water the lawn?

lawn careOnce again, the grass species is the most significant factor. Compared to cool-season grasses, warm-season species can go longer without irrigation. Most lawns don’t need water more than two to three times a week; some require even less. Always aim for fewer but longer watering sessions, which promote deeper roots. Furthermore, schedule irrigation in the morning, before the sun reaches its peak. If you water your lawn in the afternoon, the sun will evaporate most of it.

What is core aeration?

Aside from mowing and watering, another essential aspect of lawn care is core aeration. This process involves removing small pieces of grass and soil from throughout the lawn. These pieces are about half an inch wide and can range anywhere from one to six inches in depth. The resulting crevices offer many advantages like water absorption, deeper roots, and improved fertilizer uptake. Most lawns benefit from annual core aeration.

Which is better: chemical or organic fertilizer?

Whether made from compost, bone meal, or manure, organic fertilizer is better for the overall long-term health of your lawn. Since it has a lower concentration of nutrients, it’s easier to work with, and you don’t have to worry about damaging or killing the grass.
