Storm season brings the elements in full force, and your roof receives the brunt of it. Heavy winds, rain and hail can all damage your roof, creating other serious problems. It’s important that you properly prepare. Making the necessary adjustments and working with professionals as needed will ensure your roof holds up in even the worst storms.

Your Guide to Preparing Your Roof for Storm Season

1. Check for Loose Shingles

This leaves an opening for water and insects to get in. Check for signs of cracking, warping or shingles that have come loose. If you can’t tell, have a professional take a look. They can replace any shingles as needed or if they’re nearing the end of their 20-year life span, recommend a new roof installation before storm season arrives.

2. Trim Trees

Overhanging tree branches pose another risk to your roof. Should they fall in a storm, they can bust through and allow water to pour in freely. The resulting water damage can cost thousands to repair and often requires mold remediation as well. Trim all branches away from your roof. Keep in mind that even if they’re barely brushing against it, they can still loosen shingles. This is a good time to have an arborist also inspect other branches to ensure everything will hold in a storm.

3. Clean Gutters

Heavy rains can cause problems when water isn’t properly diverted from your property. Check your gutter system to ensure it’s secure to your home or business, and clean it thoroughly. You should also look at the flashing on your roofing system to make sure it will properly divert water. When water is allowed to sit on a roof, it can erode. Likewise, if it spills over the edge of your gutters, it can damage landscaping, strip paint from your home or building’s exterior and seep down to the foundation.
