Septic systems are used by homes to treat wastewater. They’re underground and self-contained and are generally utilized by homeowners who don't have access to a municipal sewer system. They treat the waste until the resultant liquids can be safely released into the ground. However, solids must be pumped out occasionally. Despite the efficiency of these systems, you still should never let certain items enter your septic tank.

Items to Keep Out of Your Septic System

1. Cooking Oil, Grease, or Fat

Nothing clogs your pipes faster than cooking grease. It combines with other chemicals in the drain and sticks to your drain pipes while attracting hair, food particles, and other debris. To avoid plumbing problems like backups, keep cooking oils out of your drain.

2. Feminine Hygiene Products

SepticThey are not biodegradable and take up space in your tank. If you make a habit of flushing them, you'll need to pump your tank more frequently. In general, anything that won’t decompose quickly shouldn’t go down the toilet or drain.

3. Wet Wipes

They are more durable than toilet paper and take much longer to deteriorate. Additionally, they take up space and could clog the drain pipes, causing a system backup. Beware of brands that are labeled "flushable."  Even these shouldn’t go down your septic tank. Also, avoid flushing infant care, makeup removal, and auto wipes.

4. Bleach or Chemical Cleansers

Avoid putting harsh chemicals down your drain. To function properly, your septic system relies on beneficial bacteria that consume waste. Bleach, liquid drain cleaners, and other cleansers can destroy these bacteria and cause your system to operate inefficiently.
