Although raising a child with ADHD presents parents with many unexpected challenges, it is also a uniquely rewarding experience. This condition makes it tougher for kids to control their behavior, but with patience and understanding, you can work together to establish a balanced life for your family. The following advice can help you establish a stronger relationship with your child, while also gaining a greater understanding of how ADHD affects their behavior.

Understanding Different Types of ADHDadhd

Not all forms of ADHD are identical. Having a child therapist provide a precise diagnosis of your son’s or daughter’s condition is the first step in learning how to best adapt to your child’s needs.

“Inattentive only” ADHD, previously known as ADD or attention-deficit disorder, is characterized by an inability to focus. These individuals don’t show hyperactive traits, meaning their condition often goes undiagnosed.

Kids with the hyperactive/impulsive form of ADHD can focus, but they display excessive energy and impetuous behavior.

There is also a combined inattentive/hyperactive/impulsive form of ADHD, in which all of the above symptoms are seen.

Developing Parenting Approaches for ADHD

Regardless of the type of ADHD your son or daughter has, a child therapist can work with them on behavior modification to ease everyday experiences, such as school. They can also give you tips on parenting through challenging moments.

For instance, children should never be punished for behavior that is out of their control — and ADHD is not within their control. A therapist can help you anticipate potentially explosive situations and develop a structured routine both you and your child will find comforting.

A therapist can also make recommendations for medication if needed. Not every child needs it, and you should avoid overestimating the importance of medication, but for some children, it can greatly improve their daily quality of life. Medication should be coupled with regular therapy.
