Moving into your first apartment can be an excellent way to gain your independence while living a flexible lifestyle, but all too often, new renters don’t realize that there is an unspoken code of conduct for people who live near one another. Here are three crucial pieces of etiquette you should remember when living in an apartment

Tips for Apartment Living

1. Park in Your Own Spot

Often, apartments have set guidelines for which parking space each renter can use. Although it may seem silly since most renters only have one car and will tend to park near their building, it is important to only park in the spot assigned to you. Parking in other places could make it more difficult for others to unload groceries from their car, access their apartment, or invite others over.

2. Keep Noise to a Minimum

Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to hear the neighbors easily through the walls, floor, and ceiling. Because you really never know how much others can hear while living in apartments, work hard to keep noise to a minimum. Work with your pets to train them not to bark, and don’t allow children to jump up and down. If you like to listen to music, consider wearing earphones.

3. Remove Laundry ASAP

apartmentsIf you use a communal laundromat, focus on removing laundry promptly so others have the chance to wash and dry their clothing according to their timetable. Avoid leaving laundry in washers, dryers, or on changing tables for long periods of time. In addition to helping you to keep track of your belongings, looking after your laundry helps to keep the area clean.
