Whether you’ve lost a tooth to trauma or decay, dental implants can provide a seamless solution. Since they look and function like natural teeth, you may rarely stop to think about them, but caring for your implants will ensure they stay in shape for years. To help you maintain your prosthetics, here are some ways to care for them.

How to Prolong the Life of Dental Implants

1. Brush Gently

dentalimplantsWith or without implants, you should floss daily and brush at least twice a day for two minutes every time. If you have implants, use a soft toothbrush or an electric toothbrush and mild toothpaste and brush your teeth and gums in a gentle circular motion to keep from damaging them. Floss your implants by wrapping the dental floss under the implant crown. For extra cavity protection, rinse with an American Dental Association-approved mouthwash.

2. Eat Well

Nutrition is the cornerstone of all wellness, including oral health. Eating a well-balanced diet consisting of primarily healthy foods like vegetables and leafy greens will help keep your teeth and gums strong and your implants intact.

Avoid chewing on sticky foods, such as taffy, and hard foods like candy or ice cubes, which could chip your dental implant crowns or bridges. Acidic or sugary foods, such as citrus juices and soda, can also weaken the structure of your implants, so limit your intake of them.

3. Avoid Smoking

Not only can tobacco stain your teeth and dental implant crowns, but it also leads to bad breath and can cause gum disease and oral cancer. If you need help quitting, ask your dentist for recommendations, such as nicotine gum or breathing exercises.

4. Visit the Dentist Regularly

Dental implants are low-maintenance, but you still need to visit your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and examinations. Your dentist will ensure your natural teeth and gums are healthy, remove plaque buildup to prevent cavities, and ensure your prosthetic is in good condition.
