During the warmer months, a failing compressor in your car's air conditioner can make even a brief drive sweltering and uncomfortable. Replacing a broken compressor with new or used auto parts is the best way to address repair issues. First, however, you need to know for sure if the compressor is the cause of the issue; below are three common signs to look for.

How to Tell If Your Car's AC Compressor Is Broken

1. Rattling Noise

An air conditioning system is comprised of numerous new or used auto parts. The more parts, the more opportunities for something to go wrong. A telltale sign of a faulty compressor is the sound of rattling, grinding, or high-pitched squealing in the dashboard whenever the AC is on. These can be caused by a seized, leaking, or worn out bearing in the compressor.

2. Lack of Cold Airused auto parts

A failing compressor isn't able to regulate the flow of refrigerant throughout the AC system. This causes noticeably warmer air to blow out of the vents when the AC is engaged. The air might also fluctuate dramatically in temperature from one moment to the next.

3. Immobile Compressor Clutch

If you're familiar with what a functioning AC compressor looks like, the clutch is the device that activates the pulley; the pulley, in turn, engages and disengages the unit from engine power. When the clutch seizes, the compressor is always in the engaged position. If the clutch breaks, the compressor is disengaged and can't get power from the engine. While a clutch can sometimes be fixed, a total compressor replacement with new or used auto parts is the most effective solution to this issue.
