With its warm, soft glow, natural light is something many homeowners aspire to have flowing through their interiors. Unfortunately, this can be tough to achieve if you have small or few windows. Here’s a list of tips to boost the amount of natural light in your home, using everything from your floors to your furniture.

How to Increase the Natural Light in Your Home

1. Add a Few Mirrors

Mirrors reflect light, so strategically place them to face windows and bounce the brightness around the room. If you have a glass door or a piece of furniture with glass paneling, face the mirror in that direction to further amplify the effect. In addition to bathing your home interiors in warm, natural light, mirrors will make your home feel bigger by creating the illusion of more space.

2. Consider Light Wood Floors

Light-colored wood floors, such as oak and maple, give you another surface to evenly reflect a lot of light. Additionally, their reflective properties mean they effectively hide dust and debris. If you love your dark floors or can’t afford to replace them, try painting your walls a light color, such as a soft gray, and using similarly colored area rugs for added warmth.

3. Rearrange Some Furniture

floorThe sun is your primary source of natural light, so you don’t want to block it from shining into your home. If furniture like couches, tables, or chairs have their backs against a window, move them inward a few inches to create a pathway for light. Also, consider a curtain with a thin fabric such as cotton to allow the beams to come through.
