4 Subjects You’ll Learn During Medical Assistant Training, Elmsford, New York

Finding a new career can change the whole trajectory of your life, and becoming a medical assistant will give you purpose and job security. Before you enroll in a medical assistant training program, it’s important to understand what you’ll study so that you can decide if it’s the right path for you. Below are a few subjects you’ll learn about in depth.

What Will You Study During Medical Assistant Training?

1. Anatomy

Understanding basic anatomy is a must for anyone working in the medical field. You’ll study the layout of the body’s muscular and skeletal structures, as well as common injuries they encounter. Internal organs and their functions will be reviewed, along with diseases associated with them and the causes of damage. You’ll also learn about the body’s various systems—such as the nervous and cardiovascular systems—and what they’re responsible for.

2. Patient Care

Bedside manner and strategies for dealing with difficult patients will be taught to you, such as sympathizing with patients who are scared or anxious. You’ll learn how to evaluate patients, take their vitals, and obtain their medical histories, too.

3. Pharmacology

Pharmacology covers the world of medications. You’ll study the different categories of drugs available, such as diuretics and anesthetics, and how they’re used to treat different conditions. To be a clinical medical assistant, you’ll need to be able to administer them, so you’ll be taught how to calculate correct dosages and give the medication, whether via injection, pill, or patch. Also, side effects and drug interactions will be covered.

4. Phlebotomy

Medical assistant programs will teach you about the proper procedure and protocols for drawing blood. The courses will cover which vessels are used for drawing blood, as well as the different tools that are used to do so. Since blood is a bodily fluid, you’ll learn how to handle it safely, including how to avoid exposing others to it and prevent contamination of the sample.
