Spring is the perfect season for road trips and long drives in the country, so it’s also an ideal time to get your vehicle taken care of. Whether you’re driving cross-country or just going camping for the weekend, a little car maintenance will help you avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure you get to your destination safely. As the weather warms up, here are a few maintenance tasks to check off your list.

3 Car Maintenance Tips for Spring

1. Check the Tires

Even if winters aren’t especially tough where you live, cold weather can still be rough on your tires. Your tires should have wear indicator bars running across the tread, or you can check the tread depth by inserting a penny into a groove upside down. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires. Spring is also an excellent time to have your tires rotated to ensure even wear and prevent blowouts.

2. Change the Oil

Most experts recommend getting the oil changed every three months or 3,000 miles. If you didn’t get it done over the winter, you might be due for fresh oil.

3. Check the Battery

Low temperatures slow the chemical reaction that makes your battery work, potentially leaving it undercharged. Even if your battery is relatively new, check the voltage at the start of spring and recharge it before heading out on any long trips. If the battery is four to five years old, it’s usually best to have it replaced.
