When the seasons change and you exchange your big wave surfboard for a smaller one, you need to implement best practices to keep it in good condition in a storage unit. Improper storage can cause damage, but if you follow these easy tips, you can save space in your home and ensure the board is ready for the next big wave season.

Do:

Clean the board.

Before placing your surfboard in storage, rinse off any salt water, dry it off completely, and strip it of remaining wax. A clean board is less likely to develop mold and will retain its condition during the off-season.

Use a bag.

If you don’t already have one, purchase a specialized storage bag for your surfboard to fend off accumulations of dust, dirt, and mold. It will also protect the board from changing temperatures while it’s stored away.

Don’t:

StorageLeave the fins on.

Always remove the fins before putting your surfboard in storage to ensure they don’t get stuck on anything or knocked off. You should also clean the fin like you do the board.

Place objects on top of it.

Don’t lean your board against the wall since it may slide and fall, resulting in damage. You also shouldn’t place anything on top of it. Objects atop or resting on the board can alter its shape over time. You may want to invest in a surfboard rack to hold it upright or horizontal.
