Refrigerators are some of the most hardworking kitchen appliances out there, as they run around the clock to do their job. Because you use your fridge every day, you’ll want to choose your new one carefully. Know what to do and not do as you shop for the new appliance and find one you’ll be happy with for years to come.

Do:

Consider the freezer location.

The three main styles are top, bottom, and side-by-side freezers. Top freezers are ideal for smaller kitchens and those that don’t need a lot of storage space. Bottom freezers offer a little more room but do require bending down to reach all your frozen items. The side-by-side model takes up a lot more square footage, but it provides more space in both your fridge and freezer.

Account for storage options.

Look at your current fridge and your normal grocery shopping list to see what your storage needs are. Do you need a lot of bins for kids’ snacks or produce? Do you have a lot of frozen food that requires a larger freezer? You’ll want to find one that suits your unique lifestyle.

Don’t:

Forget color and finish.

refrigeratorRefrigerators take up a lot of the visual space in your kitchen, so do not forget to consider aesthetics. Choose a fridge that fits in with your kitchen, such as a finish that matches the other appliances or a color that doesn’t clash with the cabinets. Only get a bright color if the rest of the room is neutral and you want the fridge to be the focal point.

Skip the measurements.

Many people forget to check the fit. Measure height, width, and your counter depth. You can have your fridge stick out a little farther than the edge of your counter but measure how much space you’ll have to walk by – you’ll want a minimum of 36 inches of open space in front of the door.
