3 Bathroom Safety Measures to Take for Seniors, Lexington-Fayette Central, Kentucky

When you have an elderly loved one living with you, you’ll need to install some safety measures throughout your home. A loss of strength, coordination, and vision all put your senior at a higher risk for falling and getting injured. One common area for falls is in the bathroom since the room is small and gets slippery. Know what elder care steps you can take to help them use the restroom safely.

Elder Care Guide for Bathroom Safety

1. Remove the Bathtub

Stepping over the wall of a bathtub is very difficult for seniors, so these dramatically raise the likelihood of a fall. If people in the house like to take baths, you can replace it with a specialized walk-in tub. If you don’t use the tub, replacing it with a walk-in shower is the most affordable solution. Choose a floor that gently slopes toward the drain, so your shower doesn’t need any type of lip that could be a tripping hazard.

2. Install Grab Bars

elder careGrab bars are valuable for giving your loved one something to hold onto for balance. Install them on either side of the toilet and in the shower. It will be up to your discretion if you think they need the bars elsewhere, depending on their condition.

3. Raise the Toilet

The average toilet is around 15 inches high, but the ADA recommends installing toilets that are 17 to 19 inches high for elder care. This is a better height for those with mobility problems since it’s easier to bend at the knees to sit down. If you don’t want to invest in an entirely new toilet, you can install a raised-height seat to help make up the difference.
