Because there’s only two letters’ difference between liquor and liqueur, many people mistake them for one another. However, these types of alcohol are distinct. To ensure you get the cocktail you want next time you’re out for drinks, learn the differences between liquor and liqueur below.

Liquor

Liquor is pronounced “licker.” As main components of most cocktails, these distilled beverages are made through a special fermentation process. They tend to have higher alcohol proofs than beer, wine, and liqueurs. Some of the most common types are vodka, tequila, gin, and whiskey. Liquors often don’t contain any flavor additives, but some flavored vodkas and other types of liquor are emerging. On their own, they tend to taste strongly of alcohol, which is why they’re typically mixed with other flavored beverages in cocktails.

Liqueur

cocktailsLiqueurs (pronounced “lick-oor,” with the emphasis on the second syllable), contain liquor, which is where some of the confusion about the two arises. But in addition to their liquor base, they contain additives like sweeteners and flavor enhancers. The process of adding different solutions to the liquor essentially waters it down, which is why the alcohol content is typically so much lower in liqueur. Flavored schnapps as well as coffee, cream, and chocolate liqueurs are among the most popular types.

Some types of liqueurs are enjoyed on their own, but they can also add depth and richness to cocktails. They’re often paired with a modest amount of liquor for more robust beverages. Sweeteners should also be reduced to round out the drink’s flavors.
