Soon it’s going to be warm enough to hit the water on the weekends. When it is, you want your boat to be fully de-winterized and ready to run. Following a checklist doesn’t just get your boat looking its best — it also helps you spot any mechanical failures and outdated safety equipment. Get started with the guide below.

How to Get Your Boat Ready This Spring

1. Test the Safety Equipment

The best boating is safe boating. Before you take your vessel on the water, make sure all the safety features are up to date. Check your fire extinguishers to see if they need a refill or replacement. Make sure your boat is stocked with flares and an emergency kit in case you get stranded with a dead engine. Test flotation devices and life jackets and replace any that are torn or have crumbling foam inside.

2. Clean It

Remove debris that may have built up during winter storage. Give your boat a thorough cleaning, inside and out, and wax it to protect the coat. You should also polish any metal railings and clean the windows. Softly scrub vinyl upholstery with a soft cloth and watch for signs of mildew. If any has formed, you may need a strong chemical cleaner to deal with it. Make sure you’re using products specifically formulated for boats, not automobiles.

3. Have It Inspected

Have a professional inspect your boat for the season ahead. Even with thorough winterization, there are still safeguards you can check to guard against issues that may have arisen during the long winter months, such as unwanted visitors while in storage; i.e. mice, raccoons, muddaubers. Missing a step while you’re preparing for the boating season could lead to a breakdown and lost time with your family on the water.
