Your health plays a pivotal role in your life, dictating everything from your ability to move and engage in recreational activities to impacting your ability to sleep. Unfortunately, many people are undernourished.  Even small changes in your diet can have a big impact. Here are three vitamins and minerals you should be including in your diet every day, and how they could improve your health.

Crucial Vitamins & Minerals for Health

1. Vitamin D

nutritional supplementsCommonly found in egg yolks, milk, salmon, mushrooms, and canned tuna, Vitamin D improves your body’s ability to store calcium and helps to protect your immunity. The human body can generate Vitamin D by being in sunlight, but many people aren’t outside enough or they wear sunscreen, so they don’t get the recommended dose. Vitamin D deficiency can cause fatigue, fertility problems, hair loss, and bone development problems, which is why people need to consume it regularly.

2. Magnesium

While magnesium is essential for improving bone health and energy levels, this mineral also helps to regulate muscle function, balance blood sugar levels, and ease sleep problems. Magnesium is also involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions.  However, the World Health Organization has reported that less than 60% of adults in the United States are getting adequate amounts of this important mineral.  Foods high in magnesium include avocado, almonds, leafy greens, black beans, yogurt, pumpkin seeds, and bananas.

3. Calcium

Most people realize that foods like milk, yogurt, and dairy products are high in calcium, but, in fact, some vegetables and proteins, including broccoli, kale, and fish, are also high in the nutrient. Chia seeds, almonds, and figs are also good sources.  Estimates show that about 40% of adults aren’t getting enough calcium in their diets, contributing to problems like tooth decay and osteoporosis.
