The beauty of antique cars goes beyond their glossy finishes and restored engines; it includes the interior as well. Often overlooked by collectors during the restoration process, the upholstery can make or break a classic ride. As such, you’ll need to select an upholsterer who can produce the best results.

How to Pick a Good Upholsterer

1. Know What You Want

Decide whether you’re going for a total restoration or customization to get a rough estimate on the overall costs. Most upholsterers and interior fabricators can provide you with a detailed quote that covers materials and labor. You might be able to save on costs by sourcing your own material, but consult with the upholsterer first to decide on what to buy.

2. Look at Previous Work

If they have won awards or received recognition for previous work, they’ll be more than happy to let you know. Ask whether they’re insured and bonded, as well as licensed to operate; you’re leaving your antique car with them, so it’s only prudent to know that you’re covered for any damages and theft.

3. Visit the Shop

Get to know the upholstery shop better by paying them a visit. Take a look inside and assess how organized or tidy it is; a shop’s appearance is often a good barometer of job quality. During the minitour, seize the opportunity to ask a few questions about their process and materials used. Do they do every part of the job or subcontract some of it? If possible, ask who’ll be doing most of the work and how much experience they have.

For the best results, entrust your antique car to a top-notch upholstery shop. If you want to see more beautiful, well-restored classic car interiors, drop by the Charlotte AutoFair.
