Hardwood floors are one of the most rewarding investments a homeowner can make; they have a rich, sophisticated appearance, and they’re long-lasting. However, to stay in good condition throughout the years, you’ll have to invest in maintaining it. Here is a guide to hardwood flooring maintenance.

How to Care for Hardwood Flooring

1. Sweeping

Even if it’s just a pile of dirt by the door, it’s easy to track small particles around the house that erode the finish on your flooring. To prevent fading and scratches, use a microfiber cloth or sweeper that attracts dirt and other particles with static electricity to clean it. You can also use a vacuum with a soft brush made for hardwood floors.

2. Mopping

flooringThe rule of thumb for hardwood flooring maintenance is to never use water—or at least, never more than is absolutely necessary. If you spill something sticky, you’ll probably need to use a damp sponge to clean it up. However, when it comes to weekly mopping, don’t fill a bucket with water. All you need is a mop and a light misting of hardwood floor cleaner. As you move the mop, go in the direction of the grain, and use gentle strokes to avoid marring the finish.

3. Polishing

Every few months, polish the flooring. After sweeping, mopping, and letting your floors dry, apply the polish according to the instructions on the bottle. This product will work as a sealant, forming a barrier that blocks moisture, spills, and other messes from penetrating the wood planks. The polish will also fill in tiny scratches in the finish, getting rid of any discoloration for a like-new appearance.
