If you’re in the process of building a new home, you might be swept up by exciting details like walk-in closets and backyard decks. However, it’s also important to take care of practical matters, such as plumbing. With the freedom to design a living space from scratch, a few small changes could make life a lot easier for you and your plumber down the line. Use the following three tips to ensure your new house features a winning plumbing design.

How to Think Like a Plumber When Building a New House

1. Keep Basement Plumbing Fixtures Close Together

In most homes, water heaters and heating systems like furnaces or boilers are housed in the basement, supplying heat to the upper levels. However, as you plan your new home, it’s crucial to ensure that these and other plumbing fixtures — including sump pumps, sewer connections, and water softeners — are situated near each other. That way, in the event of a flood or another emergency, your plumber will be able to restore peace and order much faster.

2. Make the Main Shut-Off Valve Easy to Find

plumberIf a pipe bursts in your home, you’ll only have a minute or so to stop the flow of water from causing widespread damage to your home. With this in mind, make sure your home builders place the main water shut-off valve in a place you can easily reach — not stuck in the crawlspace outside. Make a note of where it is during the planning process, so if an emergency arises, you’ll know just where to run to while you wait for the plumber.

3. Direct Sump Pump Discharge Away From Property

Your basement sump pump is responsible for sucking up water from a flood or a burst pipe that’s pooling on the floor. This prevents water damage and mold growth. When building a new home, make sure the discharge line is installed so that it carries water a safe distance away from your property, where it can drain properly. Otherwise, you’ll end up with the same problem your sump pump was trying to avoid.
