Temperatures are finally climbing across the Midwest, which means Iowa bikers are looking forward to the first ride of the season. Before taking your bike out on the road, you’ll need to take care of some routine maintenance and check your motorcycle insurance to stay safe all summer long. Below are a few tips for getting your bike ready for the warm weather ahead.

4 Tips for Getting Your Motorcycle Ready for Riding Season

1. Check the Tires

Cold weather contracts the air inside your tires, reducing the pressure and potentially causing cracks and deterioration. Before filling them up, inspect both tires carefully for signs of damage, and have them replaced if there’s any doubt about their safety.

2. Inspect the Fuel System

If the gas smells normal, it should burn without problems, but if not, you’ll have to drain the tank and replace the fuel. Check the ends of the fuel line and, if the gas has gone bad, give the carburetor a thorough cleaning.

3. Check All the Fluids

Before the first ride of the season is a good time to change the oil and top off the other fluids. Before starting up the bike, check the ground around the motorcycle for signs of leaking oil, brake fluid, or coolant.

4. Check Your Motorcycle Insurance

Most motorcycle insurance providers allow you to reduce your coverage in the winter months while the bike is sitting in storage. Before taking it out for the first ride, contact your agent to get your coverage reactivated, even if you’re just planning on taking it around the block.
