Vision issues often develop gradually, so many people don’t notice that they’re struggling to see, especially young children. While it’s possible that your kid may speak up about vision issues, it’s usually up to the parents to look out for signs that they need an eye exam. To help you decide when to visit an optometrist, here are some ways to tell when your child is having trouble seeing.

How to Tell That Your Child Needs Glasses

1. Falling Behind in School

optometristChildren who can’t read the classroom board or textbook print often fall behind in school. If their eye problems have been going on for a while, they may not even notice that they have difficulty reading. If you notice your child squinting when they read or look at distant objects, take them to an optometrist for an exam.

2. Experiencing Headaches & Eye Pain

Eyes that constantly struggle to focus can trigger headaches and eye strain. If your child frequently rubs their eyes or complains that their eyes hurt, they may need glasses.

3. Making Adjustments to See

Subtle head movements as your child reads or watches television can also indicate that they’re trying to make up for poor vision. They may squint, tilt their head, or cover one eye to try to focus on an object or scene at a distance.

4. Viewing From Up Close

Nearsighted children may complain that they can’t see the television, or try to sit on the floor or as close as possible to the screen. If they also tend to hold books and other reading materials close to their faces, they may need prescription glasses.
