When it comes to truck safety, it’s critical to remain alert while behind the wheel. Even seasoned drivers struggle with drowsiness sometimes, but they’re armed with many tricks to help them stay awake. Here are four tips to try when you hit the road to ensure you stay alert throughout the drive.

How to Prevent Drowsiness During Your Drive

1. Play Mind Games

It’s critical to keep your mind alert while driving. Consider playing games in your head to avoid sleepiness from setting in. For example, name a topic and then list an item from each letter of the alphabet that has something to do with the subject. The topic may be food, and the first item is apple, the second is banana, and so on.

2. Take Short Naps

If you’re starting to feel drowsy, pull over to a rest stop and take a 20-minute nap. Afterward, do some stretches to get the blood flowing. Reach for your toes and slowly roll back up to standing. Stretch your arms overhead and then lean to one side, and then, the other. Practice this for about five minutes.

3. Drink Caffeine

Drinking can also be helpful because it encourages you to stop occasionally to take bathroom breaks. Taking care of your body is a critical part of maintaining truck safety.

4. Talk with a Buddy

Having a conversation is an effective way to stay engaged while driving. Consider making a friend over the radio or using a headset to talk to loved ones on the phone as you work.
