Heading out on the ocean in a kayak allows you to experience local wildlife and scenery from a different perspective, providing a fun, memorable way to appreciate the natural beauty of Hawaii. If you decide to rent a kayak and adventure without a tour guide, it’s crucial you know how to safely participate in this activity.

Safety Guide for Using Kayaks on the Ocean

1. Check the Weather

The weather in Hawaii is famously temperate year round; however, tropical storms aren’t a stranger to the islands. Check the weather report before going out for the day, and if there’s a chance of lightning or high winds, reschedule your rental for when it’s calmer..

2. Know the Area

Before hopping in the water, get familiar with the area you’ll be exploring so that you don’t get lost. Pay attention to major landmarks, like tall mountains or small islands, and use them to orient yourself on the water. You can also take a GPS or map with you.

3. Stick to the Reef

kayaksWhen you’re on the water, stick to the calm water areas between the shoreline and the reef because it’s the safest place. Deep channels at the edges of the reef tend to have stronger currents that can carry you out to sea. Always check to see whether the tide is coming in or going out and stay away from all channels in the reef during outgoing tides.   Also, pay attention to where you are compared to the shore and where waves are breaking.

4. Wear Life Jackets

With strong currents and waves, even confident swimmers can experience difficulty swimming at sea. According to the law, children under 13 are required to wear a life jacket; however, they’re recommended for anyone who isn’t a seasoned swimmer.

5. Prepare for the Sun

The Hawaiian sun will feel fantastic on your skin, but the rays become stronger when they reflect off the water. Use a reef-safe sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and liberally apply over your body. Don’t forget to wear a hat or sunglasses to protect your eyes. If you plan to be on the water for a long time, bring sunscreen with you to reapply every two hours.
