Being proactive about your eye health now will help preserve your vision and prevent problems from developing further down the road. In addition to getting annual exams by an optometrist, there are some easy everyday steps you can take to protect your eyes. Below are some of the simplest and most essential ones.

3 Eye Protection Tips

1. Practice Good Screen Habits

Americans spend more than 10 hours a day looking at screens. This isn’t surprising, seeing how computers and phones are now essential parts of how we work, study, and relax. The blue light emitted by screens is particularly damaging because the eye cannot filter it out as effectively as it can other harmful types of light, like UV rays. As a result, blue light permeates the eye to a deeper level and can cause more serious consequences. Optometrists suggest keeping desktop or laptop computer screens a minimum of an arm's length away from your face, and handheld electronic devices at least 16 inches away.

2. Wear Sunglassesoptometrist

Sunlight is the largest producer of ultraviolet radiation, which is responsible for quite a few eye-related issues, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. To counteract harmful ultraviolet rays, wear sunglasses whenever you go outside during daylight hours. Optometrists recommend sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV radiation.

3. Be Smart About Eye Makeup

Wearing eye makeup isn’t bad for your eyes — as long as you’re careful about how you apply it. Bacteria can flourish on mascara wands, so optometrists recommend replacing them every three months to minimize the chances of transferring germs to the delicate eye area. Also, when lining the lashes, run the eyeliner along the base of the eye, not over the lash-line. Eyeliner can accumulate there very easily and block vital oil glands.
