The birth control pill is an integral part of many women's health care practices. When used correctly, it is 99% effective at avoiding pregnancy. But as with any medication, there are potential side effects to be aware of. Some of the more common are discussed below.

What Changes Might You Experience While on Birth Control Pills?

1. Missed or Spotty Periods

Even in people who take birth control perfectly and consistently, a period that is light—or missed altogether—sometimes happens. Illness, stress, or hormonal or thyroid issues often figure into spotty or missed periods when on the pill. Before starting the next pack, take a pregnancy test just to be sure. If missed or spotty periods become routine, consult your women's health care provider.

2. Headaches

Birth control pills contain hormones, which can trigger headaches of varying intensities. Dosage can also play a role in the development of head pain. This symptom usually subsides over time, but for serious and frequent migraines, see a doctor.

3. Weight Gain

Much of the excess weight people experience comes in the form of fluid retention, especially around the hips and breasts. Significant excess weight can have an impact on many areas of women's health, including cardiovascular issues—heart disease is the number-one killer of women—so make an effort to eat right and exercise regularly on or off the pill.

4. Changes to Sexual Desire

The surge in hormones from birth control pills can alter a person's sex drive. Some report a waning libido and less of an overall interest in sex. But the opposite is also true; with concerns about pregnancy minimized, some women undergo a spike in sexual desire.
