5 Tips to Help Your Pet Recovery After Surgery, Springfield, Ohio

Pets are a special part of your family, and you want them to stay as healthy as possible. This means helping them recover properly after a surgical procedure. Much like human surgery, pet surgery requires time afterward to mend and heal. By monitoring your pet’s behavior and health during this period, you will get them back on their feet in no time. The following are some specific ways to help your furry friend recuperate.

How Can You Help Your Pet Recover?

1. Confine Them to One Area

From stairs to other pets, your home is full of hazards for your healing pet. This is why you should keep your pet confined to one room of the house while they rest. Ensure that the space is free of furniture that they could jump on. Keeping them in this area is extra important right after surgery because they could be disoriented or dizzy from the anesthesia.

2. Stick to Their Medication Schedule

Your veterinarian will prescribe antibiotics to prevent an infection after pet surgery. They may prescribe other medications as well. Always stick with the recommended prescription schedule and give your pet their medications at the right dosages. Sticking to a routine and finishing each prescription will help the medicine work properly.

3. Keep Their E-Collar On

4. Monitor Their Incision

Following your pet’s surgery, check their incision site regularly to ensure that it’s healing. Watch for any signs of infection, including redness, excessive pus, and bleeding. You will need to change their bandages according to your vet’s instructions. When changing the dressing, keep the incision dry. Otherwise, don’t touch or mess with the wound to limit the risk of infection.

5. Call Their Vet

If your pet exhibits unusual behavior or you suspect that the surgical site could be infected, call their vet. They will likely want to see your pet and check for complications. Approximately a week after the procedure, their vet will want you to come in for a follow-up appointment to check your pet’s healing progress as well.
