The air conditioner is a hard working appliance in your home, and it does more than cool the air. It also regulates air temperature and acts as a dehumidifier. It's essential that you’re familiar with the various air conditioning parts and how they work together to get the most out of your unit.

5 Important Air Conditioning Terms

1. Refrigerant

Also known as coolant, this liquid is essential to the air conditioner working effectively. It moves through a closed loop and carries heat from the interior to the outside. It changes states as it moves through the various air conditioning parts.

2. Compressor

One of the most important components of the HVAC system, the compressor is responsible for heating the refrigerant and transforming it to its liquid form. It squeezes the gaseous refrigerant, which increases the pressure and temperature of the gas.

3. Air Filter

The filter acts as a air conditioning partsbarrier against contaminants in the space, and it improves the indoor air quality while the unit is running. It also prevents the accumulation of dust that could damage the air conditioners components.

4. Condenser

This essential air conditioning part is made up of hollow coils that expel the heat collected from inside the home. The gaseous coolant moves through the condenser and passes into the coil to cool down. As the heat escapes, the lowered temperature transforms the coolant to liquid.

5. Evaporator Coil

This part is located close to the blower and is the last stop in the coolant's journey through the different air conditioning parts. The cold, liquid refrigerant comes in from the condenser and is changed back to gas in the evaporator. As the coolant changes, a fan blows the hot air over the evaporator's cold coil and cools down the room.
