If you’ve invested in new carpet, you’ll want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. Given that flooring takes the brunt of daily life, this can be a daunting task, especially when children and pets are involved. Here are a few simple steps you can take to keep your carpets looking spick-and-span.

Easy Ways to Protect Your Carpet

1. Establish Rules

Create a “shoes off” policy in your home. Entry mats prevent a lot of dirt from being tracked in, but not all of it. Over time, accumulated dirt particles work their way into your carpet, grinding together and wearing down the fibers. Sidestep this problem altogether by leaving shoes at the door. For a family room or living room with nice flooring, consider barring food or beverages to avoid spills and stains.

2. Make Vacuuming a Habitflooring

Regular vacuuming lifts dirt from your carpet before it can become a problem. In an active household with a lot of foot traffic, vacuum two to three times a week. In areas with less activity, this can be cut down to once or twice a week. Even if you’ve hardly stepped on the carpet all week, make a few passes to eliminate dust. Empty the canister after each use or change the bag regularly. Maintain the vacuum’s filter and optimize suction by following the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Deep Clean

In addition to regular upkeep, consider a deep cleaning once a year — twice if you have pets or your household sees a great deal of foot traffic. If you don’t own a carpet shampooer or steamer, rent the equipment or hire a professional carpet cleaner to keep your flooring looking like new.
