If you’re eager to remodel your kitchen, installing new counters should be part of the process. Replacing old and dingy fixtures could make the room appear cleaner and more inviting. New surfaces don’t have cracks and crevices that collect bacteria, which could prevent germs from spreading and making people sick. When weighing options, laminate countertops are relatively easy to install and can mimic the look of more expensive materials. To aid the decision-making process, here are a few things you should know about laminate countertops for your kitchen.

What Laminate Countertops Are Made of

Laminated countertops are created by fusing multiple layers of human-made materials. At the base is kraft paper, with a decorative layer bonded on top. This latter layer decides the counter’s appearance, and it can assume a variety of looks, including steel, natural stone, or hardwood. An overlay of thin paper is then fused to the decorative layer. Melamine resin, which has a hard plastic texture, covers the top of the counter. Laminate countertops are easy to fabricate and install, and they can cut down on kitchen remodeling expenses.

Advantages of Laminate Countertops

Laminate can nick easily, so don’t cut food directly on the surfaces. Extreme heat can also warp the counters, so keep hot pans on the stove or in the oven. Although you can’t cut directly on laminate or apply heat, these durable surfaces are great for unpacking and storing groceries, sorting food, and preparing ingredients. The counters are also ideal for family homes, as kids can put backpacks on them without leaving behind scrapes and scratches.
