Summer is peak time for air conditioner use. When the mercury rises, you’ll be thankful for your system, but to ensure it meets your demands, some AC maintenance is required. Like any appliance, your system needs to be tuned up. The following checklist will help you get ready for the heat.

Summer AC Preparation Tips

1. Clean the Unit

Before you switch the air conditioner on, clean around the outdoor unit. Plenty of debris has likely built up over the winter and from new spring growth. Creeping vines may get into the vents and damage the condenser or other parts. Likewise, dirt and debris can coat moving pieces and keep your system from functioning optimally. Spray the casing off with the hose and trim any foliage back a few feet. This will ensure nature doesn’t mess with your system.

2. Change Air Filters

AC maintenanceWhen air filters become clogged, cool air can’t flow properly. This creates a backup, and your system has to work harder to achieve the programmed temperatures. The strain can break down parts and cut into your unit’s life span, and the extra energy usage will also cause utility bills to skyrocket. Make checking and changing the air filters part of your quarterly AC maintenance plan.

3. Check the Thermostat

You need to be confident your system and thermostat are communicating properly. The second step in your AC maintenance plan should be to test this. Program the thermostat on a low setting—somewhere in the 60s. Wait and see how cool your home gets. You can measure the indoor temperature with a thermometer. If you aren’t reaching the desired temperatures, an HVAC technician needs to give your thermostat a check.
