That on-demand aspect creates a better energy efficiency since you’re only using the energy exactly when you need it. These fixtures tend to have smaller tanks, so they aren’t as useful if you have a large family or tend to use many appliances at once. Because these systems are so responsive, they are usually much more expensive upfront than their conventional tank-using counterparts.

3. Heat Pumps

Sucking out heat from the outside air and then applying it to your water, these units are also extremely energy-efficient. Because they are reliant on heat for energy, they aren’t as viable in regions with colder climates. You’ll also need a generous amount of space to house the heat pump itself, which rests above the heater. Like many energy-efficient devices, you can expect higher installation costs, but expect to reclaim some of that money with the lower utility bills.

Solar water heaters leverage roof panels to take in heat from the sun, which they then transfer to your water. Again, you can expect gains in energy efficiency and lower bills, while also potentially reaping tax benefits for installing the panels.
