An MRI is a type of imaging test that uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the organs and tissues. In a traditional, closed MRI, the patient is put in a long cylindrical tube, sometimes for up to an hour or more. An open MRI is performed without such an all-encompassing enclosure, which allows for a host of benefits for patients.

Reasons to Choose an Open MRI

1. Causes Less Anxiety

MRIs can be essential tools in diagnosing and monitoring potential health problems. With that said, some patients are understandably nervous about the procedure. If they have existing anxiety issues or fears like claustrophobia, a closed MRI will only heighten their nerves. An open MRI removes much of the physical enclosure that nervous patients find so anxiety-provoking, allowing for a calmer test.

2. Allows for a Monitor in the Room

Some patients need to have another person with them during testing. Elderly people, those with disabilities, and children may not be able to go unmonitored into the enclosed tube of a traditional MRI. With an open MRI, a support person can be in the room and visible during the testing procedure.

3. Prioritizes Comfort

MRIThe open MRI has a larger scan volume, so it is better able to take into account the size of the patient and any unique physical needs they may have. This makes the experience much more comfortable for bariatric patients and patients in wheelchairs.

If any of the above situations applies to you, request an open MRI from your doctor. Main Street Radiology has been offering a variety of medical testing services in the Queens, NY, area for nearly five decades. In addition to open and closed MRIs, they provide ultrasounds, colonoscopies, mammograms, and biopsies, among many other procedures.
