If your vehicle is making strange noises, it’s a likely sign of a mechanical issue. Waiting too long to have it inspected could result in a breakdown and endanger your safety on the road. Here are a few vehicle noises you should never ignore and when to see an auto repair specialist.

3 Types of Noises that Indicate the Need for Auto Repair

1. Whining

High-pitched whining noises often come from the vehicle’s power steering system or the transmission. When the noise is in the front of the vehicle, it might mean that there’s a leak in the power steering system, which can hurt your fuel efficiency. Whining can also be due to a misaligned engine belt or worn bearings.

2. Rumbling

This issue requires immediate attention from a technician as a faulty muffler or hole in the exhaust pipe could leak gas into the car’s cabin and put you at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.

3. Squealing

If you hear a squealing sound when putting pressure on the brakes, this is likely due to worn brake pads and requires replacement. Over time, the brake pads will wear down and scrape against the rotors. Squealing tires are due to low tire pressure, which can be fixed by inflating your tires.
