What Makes a Garage Door Fire-Rated?, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

For many people, garage doors are nothing more than another entry point for their home or business. However, because garages are often used to store combustible materials such as gas, they tend to have a higher risk of fires than other parts of a building. In the event of an emergency, a fire-rated garage door can prevent the spread of flames for up to four hours. Here is what makes a door fire-rated, and how to fireproof a garage.

How Do Doors Contribute to Fire Safety in a Garage?

1. Features

garage doorsFire-rated garage doors are typically made using galvanized or stainless steel. They’re designed to contain a fire to prevent it from spreading. Many can also be linked to smoke alarms, closing automatically if a fire or smoke is detected.

2. Certifications

A garage door is only “fire safe” if it has the right certifications. This includes a UL certificate, which assigns fire protection ratings based on how long the door can withstand a fire. A door that complies to LEED® and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards also offers environmental and safety benefits.

3. Other Protections

To ensure a garage is fireproof, the other exits and fixtures in the space should also protect against heat and flames. Entry doors leading from the garage must be a minimum of 1 to 3/8 inches thick, while able to withstand a fire for 20 minutes. Some doors even feature self-operating mechanisms in the presence of smoke or carbon monoxide, keeping out fires or opening to ventilate an area.
