During a thyroid ultrasound, sound waves are utilized to generate pictures of the gland and monitor its condition. It can detect any abnormalities if present. Even though ultrasounds are painless and relatively quick, many patients have questions about what to expect during the test. To answer some of those questions, below is a brief overview of thyroid ultrasounds, their purpose, and what they entail.

Uses

The goal of the ultrasound is for your doctor to receive images of your thyroid gland. The doctor may have found potential lumps, nodules, tumors, or other anomalies on the thyroid during a physical exam or on another type of imaging test. The ultrasound offers a more comprehensive view that can give detailed insight into the condition of the thyroid. The imaging can show if a nodule in the neck is coming from the thyroid or another location close by, if a nodule is benign or requires a biopsy, and if nodules have changed in size since a previous ultrasound.

Procedure

ultrasoundsNot much is required in the way of preparation. Wear loose-fitting clothing and leave jewelry at home. The technologist may ask you to change into a hospital gown beforehand. If you have some anxiety about the procedure, take a few deep breaths and focus on relaxation; the test is sensitive to motion, and you'll be asked to stay as still as possible during it. The technician will rub a conductive gel over the area to be tested, and a sensor called a transducer will then be moved over the gel.

Frequency

A patient should have a thyroid ultrasound whenever their doctor deems it medically necessary. In cases where no abnormalities are detected, no further ultrasounds are typically needed. If a patient does have a lump or similar anomaly, the doctor will often order additional follow-up imaging, such as a secondary test or another type of ultrasound.
