The ultrasound offers a more comprehensive view that can give detailed insight into the condition of the thyroid. The imaging can show if a nodule in the neck is coming from the thyroid or another location close by, if a nodule is benign or requires a biopsy, and if nodules have changed in size since a previous ultrasound.

Procedure

Not much is required in the way of preparation. Wear loose-fitting clothing and leave jewelry at home. The technologist may ask you to change into a hospital gown beforehand. If you have some anxiety about the procedure, take a few deep breaths and focus on relaxation; the test is sensitive to motion, and you'll be asked to stay as still as possible during it. The technician will rub a conductive gel over the area to be tested, and a sensor called a transducer will then be moved over the gel.

Frequency

A patient should have a thyroid ultrasound whenever their doctor deems it medically necessary. In cases where no abnormalities are detected, no further ultrasounds are typically needed. If a patient does have a lump or similar anomaly, the doctor will often order additional follow-up imaging, such as a secondary test or another type of ultrasound.
