Trees provide clean air and shade, and they help control energy usage within homes—making them essential for most environments.  If you’d like to see more of these majestic plants in your area, use this upcoming Arbor Day on April 26 to plant one or two around your home or neighborhood. The tree care guide below will help you select the right type for your region and see that it grows into a sturdy and healthy specimen.

What to Know About Planting New Trees?

1. Choose Trees Appropriate for the Area

The first step of tree care is selecting the right species for your region. Trees native to other regions may have a hard time thriving in the climate and soil type in your area. They might also become invasive and overrun the surrounding environment. In Nebraska, opt to plant large, deciduous trees, such as the bald cypress, northern catalpa, and Kentucky coffeetree. American elm hybrids are also sturdy choices, as they are resistant to drought, ice, cold, and salt and are also easy to transplant.

2. Protect the Roots

tree careDuring the transplant, pay special attention to the roots. This process often damages the root system and makes it difficult for growth to occur at the new site. Use burlap sacks to keep the root ball moist and protected from sunlight during transport. Dig a hole that is two to three times the size of the ball and as deep as it is tall. Keep in mind that going too deep will prevent oxygen from reaching the roots. Before placing the tree, use a rototiller to loosen the soil, which will encourage the roots to grow beyond the ball. Then, after ensuring it’s straight, pack the soil firmly to stabilize it and eliminate air holes.

3. Keep It Moist

Tree care for young saplings is heavily dependent on deep and regular watering to prevent disease and encourage deep root growth. At least once a week, test that the soil is moist at least four to six inches down. For the tree’s first year, water every one to two weeks, depending on the rainfall in your region, to ensure it stays properly hydrated. Additionally, add a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, maintaining at least one to two feet of distance from the trunk, and perform regular weeding to retain moisture and prevent competition.
