If you’re working hard to raise a young child at home, you’ll want to know their preschool is living up to the same high standards. That’s why the Hawaii Preschool Content Standards offer parents a measure of quality with which to pick the perfect learning environment for their children. Separated into five domains, these standards allow preschool teachers to formulate daily lesson plans that contribute to overarching goals for the year. Here’s a quick overview of the HPCS guidelines.

An Introduction to the Hawaii Preschool Content Standards

1. Physical Development, Health & Safety

This aspect of the HPCS focuses on endowing preschoolers with the knowledge to stay safe throughout their daily life, as well as in the event of an emergency. This domain also focuses on expanding your child’s awareness of their bodies and how they interact with the environment. This domain is especially important for ensuring parents that their little ones won’t spend the whole day behind a desk or on the floor.

2. Personal & Social Development

This next domain focuses on how to recognize and express feelings and addresses many key aspects of socialization and group participation. These lessons will be the starting blocks for your child’s character, teaching them to be patient, take turns, and help the people around them, all while acknowledging their own feelings and opinions.

3. Communication, Language Development & Literacy

Domain III focuses on language skills, gradually moving from verbal to written forms of communications. First, HPCB-compliant preschools work on teaching your child to tell stories, describe items, and expand their vocabulary, helping them to communicate with their loved ones, classmates, and teachers. From there, the domain moves into reading and writing skills, from recognizing familiar words on the page to producing rhymes. This section will form the basis of your child’s academic career as they move into grade school and beyond.

4. Cognitive Development

preschoolWhen your little one has mastered these basics, preschool lessons will venture into ways of thinking, expanding your child’s imagination and critical thinking. It’s in this domain that your child may start to realize their academic interests, such as learning about the earth and sky or sorting items by shape and color.

5. Creative Development

The fifth and final domain focuses on the arts. As an introduction to creative studies, teachers will teach your child about visual art by having them draw, paint, and describe others’ artwork. They will also touch on music, creative movement, and drama. Eventually, they’ll even touch on aesthetic appreciation. In addition to the academic benefits of art education, this domain could ultimately be your child’s introduction to their future hobby or passion.
