If you want to straighten your teeth in a way that’s less noticeable and more comfortable than traditional metal braces, Invisalign® may be the right solution for you. Using a series of custom, clear aligner trays, this orthodontic treatment gradually shifts your teeth into their ideal position. And unlike standard braces, you’ll be able to remove them as needed. However, to get the full benefit out of these aligners, you’ll need to take special care of them, as described below.

Ways to Keep Your Aligner Trays Clean

1. Take Them Out Before Eating

Invisalign trays should never be worn while eating, as the act of chewing may damage or warp the device. After finishing your meal, make sure your teeth are clean before putting them back on.

2. Practice Routine Oral Hygiene

Even with Invisalign on, your teeth and gums will develop plaque—a bacterial film that contributes to cavities and gum disease. When the teeth are shielded by the trays, it will be harder for saliva to neutralize the bacterial activity, which, in turn, may increase your risk of oral health issues. As such, keep brushing twice a day and flossing daily.

3. Rinse Regularly

Anytime you take off the aligners, rinse them out with lukewarm water. Avoid excessively hot temperatures, as this may cause them to warp. If you need to sanitize the devices, let them sit in mouthwash.

4. Soak In Cleaning Crystals

InvisalignIn addition to regular rinsing, soaking the aligners in an appropriate cleansing solution is recommended about once a day. The orthodontist may recommend using the Invisalign-brand cleaning crystals or standard denture cleaning product. Whatever you use, the effervescent soak should help remove calcium buildup and other debris on the inside of your trays. Once complete, gently brush the tray and rinse it out. While you can use a toothbrush, do not use toothpaste as it could harm the surface of the device.

5. Keep Them Covered

Anytime you’re not wearing the Invisalign, keep them covered in their case. This protection will prevent the trays from getting smashed or warped due to temperature changes. It will also help ensure that they are kept in clean condition.
