A random toothache often doesn't seem like cause for concern. In many cases, there’s nothing wrong. In others, however, it can be a side effect of a more serious oral health issues. Even one-off toothaches warrant a consultation with your dentist. There’s no true way to know that something isn’t wrong without their expertise.

Issues Related to Tooth Pain

1. Cavities

In many cases, a toothache can be an early warning sign of a cavity. When decay-causing bacteria break through enamel, they begin eroding a tooth. Pain often follows. If not treated, a cavity can develop into a root canal infection that requires more extensive care. The infection may also spread to the gums and create other problems. Speak with your dentist to make sure and so they can fill the cavity before it worsens.

2. Gum Disease

Pain is a common side effect. Your dentist will need to inspect your mouth and perform a scaling and root planing procedure to resolve the issue. Never put off care; a toothache could eventually lead to the tooth breaking or falling out.

3. Tooth Sensitivity

A common form of tooth pain is sensitivity. If you have weak enamel, hot and cold foods and drinks may irritate your teeth and create pain. Weak enamel means you’re more susceptible to decay. Your dentist will need to check and then advise on ways, such as prescription toothpastes, to re-mineralize teeth and prevent sensitivity.
