If you have a damaged or missing tooth, your dentist may recommend a dental implant. This prosthetic is long-lasting and it will prevent bone loss associated with missing teeth. The procedure is routine, but those who have not undergone oral surgery before may be a little unsure of what to expect. Below is a brief overview of the procedure to alleviate any concerns and ensure you go into your consultation confident.

What to Expect During Dental Implant Surgery

Phase I

During the first appointment, the dentist will start by administering an anesthetic. If necessary, they’ll first remove the damaged tooth. Next, the area will be made sterile and then the dental implant is placed into the open space. This provides a secure anchor. You won’t feel any pain or discomfort since you’ll be under anesthesia. Once the dental implant is in place, the dentist will secure it while your gums heal. Generally, the healing process takes several months.

Phase II

dental-implant-hulse-dentalOnce you’ve recovered, you’ll go through a second procedure. This time, the dentist will uncover the dental implant so they can attach an abutment on top of it. They’ll then take a mold of the area so they can make a crown that fits in the space. The resulting tooth looks perfectly natural.  It is normal to come in for fittings or readjustments until the fit is perfect.

After the Procedure

Expect some discomfort after each surgery. There may be bruising or swelling in the area. To ease discomfort, your dentist may prescribe a painkiller. Keep the surgical site clean by gently rinsing with saltwater after meals and only consume soft foods and liquids at first. Once the crown is in place, you’ll need to care for it just like your other teeth. Brush and floss daily, see the dentist at least twice a year, and use moderation when eating sugary and acidic foods.
