Walking your pet doesn’t have to be a luxury exclusive to dog people. Cat owners can also take their animals out for walks to bond with them, let them explore the outdoors safely, and get them the exercise they need. It can be tricky to convince your kitty to let you guide them, however, so here are a few tips veterinarians give to people who want to walk their cats.

How Can I Train My Cat to Go on Walks?

1. Use a Harness

veterinarian-the-pet-clinicAttaching a leash to a collar can be uncomfortable for your cat when you pull it, and they may try to squirm out of it. For a more comfortable and secure option to lead your cat, invest in a quality harness that can be adjusted to the size of their torso. Choose a leash that’s long enough to give them the independence that they naturally crave.

2. Start Indoors

Once you have a harness, let your cat sniff it to grow familiar with it. You can try putting it on them, but forcing it can make them associate the harness with negative feelings and make it more difficult in the future. When they do allow you to put it on them, have them wear it around the house, then add the leash to practice walking them around your home. Instead of tugging or forcing them to walk, entice them with veterinarian-approved treats and reward them when they move.

3. Watch Out for Risks

Before taking your cat outside, make sure they’re up-to-date on all of their vaccinations, and ask your veterinarian about any new shots they might need to protect them from outdoor elements.

When they’re ready to face the world, try walking around your yard or around the block. Familiarize yourself with plants that can be toxic to cats, such as lilies, and ensure your pet isn’t approaching insects, other pets, or objects that could harm them. When you return home, don’t forget to check their fur for ticks and bugs.
