The Challenge:

Our Client, a niche education authority, with multiple IDF closets at their Headquarters and populated primarily with switches that were reaching end of support from the manufacturer, was planning to replace them all with new models. Wholesale replacement would have been very expensive and put a strain on all IT spending for the remainder of that fiscal year.

Our Solution: 

While the initial focus was on the HQ site, WPG looked at their network as a whole, gathering information about the switch stacks at their remote locations, which were comprised of more current models capable of being supported for another 1-2 years. WPG then worked with client to identify actual port utilization in each HQ stack, as well as identify individual switches in the HQ stacks that were the same models as the remote locations. Ultimately, the decision was made to replace the remote site's switch stacks, and re-purpose switches from the remotes at HQ. This created a standardized environment at all locations, enhanced performance and most importantly saved approximately $150K vs. the originally targeted plan.
