A lush lawn takes up the most amount of room in most backyard landscaping, creating a place for your family to play and relax. If your yard is bare, tree removal has left its marks, or if constant foot traffic has made it look dull, there are a couple of different ways you can plant new grass to make it like new. Here are some of the methods landscaping designers use to create a healthy field.

How to Create a New Lawn

1. Sod or Turf

To transform your backyard landscaping in no time, lay out a fresh roll of sod to replace any dead grass. Turf needs to be laid quickly to prevent it from drying and dying, and can be trimmed to fit any shape or size of lawn. Connect the edges of each strip to ensure the grass grows seamlessly, and in under a day, you’ll have a brand new yard. For sloped areas where rain and water can wash seeds downhill, sod is an effective grass solution.

2. Seed

Backyard LandscapingFor the most inexpensive option to renew your lawn, choose seeding, since planting grass from seeds requires less labor than laying out and sizing sod.

Spread the seeds over bare soil, spray the area with fertilizer and water, then stay off your backyard landscaping for a few weeks until your grass establishes to ensure you don’t disrupt the seeds. Once grown in, seeds create a smooth layer of cold-season grass with none of the seams of sod.

3. Lawn Plugs

Sprigs are established grass plants with existing root systems, while plugs are circles of turf. To plant warm-season grasses, transplant sprigs or plugs into your ground, allowing them to spread and grow. Much like seeding, laying plugs cuts down on the time it takes to trim a layer of sod, but requires some time before you can see the results of the work.
