Skin cancer is a common diagnosis in the United States, estimated to affect one in five people every year. Fortunately, early diagnosis increases the odds of successful treatment significantly, making regular visits with the dermatologist essential. In addition to these appointments, you should also conduct monthly self-exams at home using the ABCDE method. Find out how to use it below.

What Is the ABCDE Method?

To catch any abnormalities in your skin, you should check your own moles every month. After a shower, when you’re already stripped down, is an ideal time to do this. As you examine each mole, look for the ABCDE’s:

  • Asymmetry: If you draw a line through the middle of the mole, will it be the same on either side? If not, this could be a warning sign of a cancerous area.
  • Borders: Benign moles will have even, smooth borders. Irregularities along the edges could indicate melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
  • Color: Is the mole a uniform color throughout? Unevenness in terms of hue is another warning sign to look out for.
  • Diameter: Melanomas tend to be larger than benign moles. Look closely at any mole larger than six millimeters in diameter and take note of anything you find so you can alert your dermatologist.
  • Evolution: This refers to any changes in the size, shape, or texture of a mole. Also, look for any abnormalities like itching, crushing, or bleeding. Keep records of your findings so you can talk to your dermatologist about any changes.

What to Expect From a Skin Cancer Screening

skin cancerIf you notice any irregularities during your self-exam, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist. They will examine your moles from head to toe using dermoscopy, a tiny light with a magnifying lens. If they have any concerns, they will suggest a biopsy. This involves taking a small tissue sample and checking it under the microscope for cancerous cells.
