Tire blowouts are more than problematic--they are dangerous because you can lose control of your vehicle, resulting in serious auto repair expenses. Blowouts typically occur from pressure problems or contact with road hazards and are more likely to occur from May to October. People drive farther and more often during these warm weather months, and usually with extra vehicle weight that puts serious pressure on tires. Keep yourself safe during Tire Blowout Season and the rest of the year with these tips.

3 Ways to Prevent Tire Blowouts

1. Monitor the Pressure

Check the tire pressure about once a month using a gauge tool. Too much air results in serious rubber pressure that can pop the tire on its own or as soon as it hits a road hazard. Too little air means the rubber makes more contact with the road, causing increased friction, heat, and wear. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct tire psi, or pounds per square inch of pressure, to prevent these problems.

Also, monitor the tire pressure more closely during extreme weather. Hot air causes an increase in tire pressure, while cold weather causes it to drop. Use your monthly pressure checks to inspect the tires for sidewall cracks, embedded nails, and other abnormalities.

2. Avoid Overloading Your Vehicle

Review the manufacturer’s weight limit guidelines so your tires do not have to work extra hard to move your vehicle. Find solutions that involve sharing the weight--for example, if you and your extended family are going on a beach vacation, there is no reason why your car has to carry all of the surfboards.

3. Schedule Routine Rotations & Replacements

Maintain a tire rotation schedule with your local auto repair center to encourage even wear. Front tires wear out quicker than back versions because they do the majority of the turning. Rotating the tires every six months keeps the front tires from wearing out too quickly and requiring untimely replacements. Also, keep the life span of your tires in mind, as they usually last between six to 10 years depending on factors such as road conditions, driving habits and frequency, and climate.
