Your veterinarian provides vital services to your pet, from general checkups to preventative treatments. On April 28, you can show your appreciation to these passionate professionals by celebrating World Veterinary Day. If you’re looking for ways to honor the veterinarian in your life, discover more about the history behind this day and how it has helped to shape animal medicine.

The History of World Veterinary Day

veterinarianAlthough this day of awareness wasn’t recognized until 2000 by the World Veterinary Association, the history dates back to 1863 in Hamburg, Germany, when Professor John Gamgee summoned veterinarians from ten countries to discuss the animal disease control and prevention. The original organization was comprised of only 103 professionals, but has since grown to include more than 500,000 members today. Their meetings allow veterinarians from all over the world to exchange ideas on animal food safety, welfare, and treatment of lethal diseases and conditions.

How Can You Recognize Your Veterinarian?

If you have an appointment coming up, bring your veterinarian and their staff a small symbol of gratitude like donuts and coffee or tea. If you won’t be in the office this month, send a thank you card to remind your veterinary practice that you know the work they do is important. You can also ask about donating to a Good Samaritan account for individuals who can’t afford treatments for their pets or collecting pet goods to donate to a shelter in the vet’s name.

If you’re looking for a trustworthy veterinarian to tend to your four-legged family member, talk to the team at Wahiawa Pet Hospital in Hawaii. These neighborhood vets provides a range of preventative, general and surgical care services for cats and dogs in a welcoming environment. Learn more about their services online or call (808) 621-7000 to make an appointment today. Don’t forget to ask about their military discounts.
